BACKGROUND:
Brynja was born to Ingvar and Annika of the Fimbulvetr Tribe. Both of her parents were respected members, but Ingvar, her father, was especially renowned for his fierceness in battle. Her mother, Annika, was trained in medicine despite not being official in rank. She couldn't stand waiting in the den in the hopes that her mate would return safely. So during times of war and skirmishes, it was typical of Annika to bravely venture to the battle grounds and treat the injuries of Ingvar, and others in need.
While Brynja and her brother, Viggo, were growing up, she remembered her parents leaving for one of the biggest battles that Brynja could remember. However, the fighting did not take place in Fimbulvetr territory. A messenger had came to the Fimbulvetr tribe on behalf of the Mannavegr tribe, requesting aid. Their Mannavegr neighbors were desperately fending off a fierce invasion from the raptors. It was a large raid; it seemed as if the raptors were hellbent in killing as many of the dilophosaurs as they could. And so warriors from Fulbulvetr rose to the call, her father included, and they helped their Mannavegr allies fight back against the attack.
Although the battle was won thanks to Fimbulvetr's help, Brynja's father never came back home that day. Only their mother had finally returned after what seemed like an eternity. She had been with father when he died, and she was the one who had to break the terrible news to her children and re-live the trauma. And although Ingvar's sudden death was heartbreaking for their family, Brynja's life continued, as life does. She continued to grow up and learn the ways of the Fimbulvetr. She learned the survival skills necessary to live in the mountains. While her brother Viggo's lessons were aimed more on warrior training and war tactics, Brynja's teaching involved being able to hunt and kill prey for the tribe.
When she was an older adolescent, Brynja was proving to be a skillful hunter and had a lot going for her, but her life would change during one unlucky day. During a hunt, Brynja and her friends had chased down a mountain goat, and Brynja followed it down a steep cliff, confidently, like she had done before. Because the cliff had a hazardous layer of ice hidden under the snow, Brynja lost her footing and tore a tendon in her ankle, which rendered Brynja barely able to walk. The next several months would consist of strict bed rest and uselessness. A torn tendon was a serious injury, albeit not a life-threatening one, but it would mean that she would have to be cared for. Brynja hated this, she knew it was a sign of weakness in her tribe. During the long months that followed, her life seemed to stay painfully still while her leg was healing. Her mother was the one who supported her the most during this time, but it made Brynja feel like a hatchling in a nest. She had to stay busy and work her mind. She remembered talking to mother a lot during this time, mother showed her how to use the sky and stars for navigation, and she learned how to identify and use basic medicinal herbs.
It took Brynja many months to fully recover, but still there were residual effects to her mobility. She was not quite as fast as before, and heavy activity would cause her ankle to get sore and stiff. But Brynja was excited to return to her normal duties and life, and re-try her luck during the hunts. Although she had friends in the tribe who supported her and assured her things would be fine, there were some tribemates who discouraged her from re-joining the hunting parties, urging her to think about settling into less physical roles. She had also approached the age where other females were coaxing her to find a mate. Brynja was, and still is, undecided on what she wants to do, and for now just continues to help around as best as she can. What awaits her in the future? Will she be looked upon as a huntress, a gatherer, a healer, a mentor? Or something else entirely?
